Diesel Exhaust Filters: The Most Common Questions, Answered

The popularity of diesel engines remains immense, and it is diesel that powers the majority of the world’s transportation and supply chains. Freight trains, ships, and trucks all run, predominantly, on diesel fuel. Notably, passenger vehicles and light commercial vehicles are all also typically outfitted with diesel engines.

Diesel is relatively affordable and offers excellent fuel economy when compared to gas-powered engines, but recently, diesel emissions have been called into sharp relief.

Fortunately, there are systems that have been developed to help combat emissions, known as diesel exhaust aftertreatment systems.

One of the central components of the aftertreatment system is the DPF, or diesel particulate filter, which is also known as a diesel exhaust filter.

These filters (as well as their maintenance) are surrounded by a world of questions, so we rounded up some of the common ones and provided answers here.

What Is a Diesel Exhaust Filter?

The diesel exhaust filter, also known as a diesel particulate filter or DPF, is a central component in the aftertreatment system. First invented by Peugeot in 2000, the DPF captures and stores particulate matter (soot and ash) from the engine, and also regenerates the soot, which still contains potential energy in the form of incompletely combusted compounds.

Why Do Diesel Exhaust Filters Need to Be Cleaned?

The DPF captures both soot, which can be regenerated (burned off for additional energy) and ash, which is already completely combusted residue. Over time, the ash will accumulate in the DPF and become so hardened that the DPF fails to operate as intended. It is important to clean the DPF periodically before this occurs.

Is It Better to Clean or Replace a DPF Filter?

It depends on the condition of the DPF. if the diesel exhaust filter is damaged or completely obstructed, then most mechanics will advise replacement. If it is very old it may make more sense to replace it, too.

However, for routine purposes, with an operable filter that simply needs the excess ash deposits removed, it may be entirely practical simply to clean it.

How Long Do DPF Filters Last?

When properly maintained, most diesel exhaust filters will last for the life of the vehicle. Many diesel particulate filters are rated to last between 5 and 10 years or 10,000 hours of operation, depending on how well they are maintained. The number one thing you can do to keep your DPF in good shape is to have it cleaned and serviced regularly.

How Often Does a DPF Need to Be Cleaned?

That depends on vehicle use and the condition of the current DPF, but in general, it is recommended to have your diesel exhaust filter serviced every 150,000 and 200,000 miles or so.

What Causes a DPF to Fail?

There are a variety of mechanical factors that can hamper the operability and efficiency of a diesel exhaust filter or cause it to fail outright. among some of the more common ones are the following:

  • Damaged glow plugs can hinder the operation of the DPF.
  • Exhaust gas temperature, or EGT, is too high or too low. The optimal EGT is typically around 250℃ for most engines.
  • A damaged thermostat (preventing the system from reading the temperature and responding accordingly).
  • Damaged DPF sensors.
  • Short low-speed journeys or prolonged engine operation at low revolutions (such as idling for long periods of time). Both of these prevent the system from reaching the optimal EGT for regeneration.
  • Using the wrong engine oil.
  • Failing to service the diesel exhaust filter routinely.

Keep in mind that these are only some of the common reasons a DPF might fail or experience a downgrade in performance. If you have any questions, contact us or have your vehicle inspected by an accredited mechanic who can diagnose the issue for you.

Can I Clean a DPF Myself?

You can potentially clean the filter yourself but it is best to have the filter professionally cleaned by an experienced technician. We recommend the latter (and also offer DPF cleaning services).

How Much Does It Cost to Replace a Diesel Exhaust Filter?

Replacing the filter will depend on which filter the exhaust aftertreatment system requires as well according to the make and model of the filter. In general, though, expect replacement costs to range between $3,000 and $10,000.

Can You Drive with a Blocked/Faulty DPF?

Do not drive with a faulty DPF or attempt to remove one from the vehicle. For one, it is illegal to operate a diesel vehicle that does not have a DPF installed and it is also illegal to remove it. If that doesn’t serve as discouragement enough, driving without a DPF will have a severe and adverse impact on engine performance and fuel economy. So in short, the answer is no.

What Are the Symptoms of a Blocked Diesel Exhaust Filter?

Now that you know pretty much everything you need to know about diesel exhaust filters, what they do, and why they need to be cleaned, let’s talk about some of the symptoms to keep watch for that may indicate you have a DPF problem that needs addressing.

  • The DPF warning light on your dashboard comes on.
  • You notice a marked increase in fuel consumption as compared to historical averages.
  • Your engine feels sluggish or you notice a dropoff in performance.
  • You notice poor throttle response.
  • Thick smoke coming from the exhaust, or a pungent burning/fuel smell in the exhaust.
  • For severely damaged or obstructed filters, the engine will not start.

Pay Attention to the DPF Warning Light!

More often than not, the many sensors with which diesel vehicles are equipped will tell you whether or not there is a problem. That is your first line of defense against the headaches that DPF filter failure or obstruction can bring about.
